A ground breaking ceremony was held yesterday for Turbine No 2 of the O Mon Thermal Power Plant in Cuu Long (Mekong) Delta's Can Tho City.

Group 2 has been built with JPY27.5 million (US$351,000) in official development assistance (ODA) loan from Japan.

Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, Yukio Ishida of Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA)'s representative office in HCM City said Turbine No 2 would not only improve power supply but also provide an economic boost for Mekong Delta provinces.

The total capacity of the power plant will now increase to 660MW. It supplies power to 62 industrial parks in the delta. Turbine No 2, which will run on Furnace Oil (FO) and natural gas, will be constructed and supervised by Japan's Sojits Corporation, Korea's Daelim Industrial Company, and Japan's TEPSCO.

Turbine No 1 of the O Mon Thermal Power Plant, also built by with Japanese ODA funding, started operations in 2009. — VNS
