Vietnamese Workers Abroad Remit Home $3 Billion Last Year

Vietnamese guest workers in foreign countries sent home more than $3 billion last year, the local media reported, citing minister of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs Dao Ngoc Dung.

The foreign currency sent home by overseas Vietnamese workers has helped fuel the country’s socioeconomic development, especially in rural areas, job creation and poverty reduction, Dung added.

Last year, more than 142,800 domestic workers went abroad for guest work, exceeding the plan by 30 percent and up 6 percent over 2017.

Japan took on the biggest number of Vietnamese workers with over 67,000 people, followed by Taiwan with 65,000 and South Korea with 6,000.

Local labourers are now encouraged to choose jobs that are most appropriate to their ability and involve new technologies so that they can contribute to Vietnam’s development when they come back to the country, Dung said.
