BIDV Former Deputy Director Arrested

Former deputy general director at Bank for Investment and Development of Vietnam (BIDV) Doan Anh Sang has been detained for banking operation regulation violations.

The police have also arrested five related others; Ngo Duy Chinh, director of BIDV’s Thang Long branch; Nguyen Xuan Giap, deputy director of Ha Thanh branch along with Pham Hong Quang and Nguyen Thanh Nam also from Ha Thanh branch. These four have also been accused of the same violations with Sang.

Sang, 57, who was a former member of the Standing Board of the Party Committee at BIDV, was found to be responsible for the violations and shortcomings of the standing board during the 2010-2015 and 2015-2020 tenures, including violating regulations on loans, financial guarantees, investments and debts.

He was held responsible for the proposal and appraisal of loans, worth VND4.7 trillion (USD201.8 million), for 12 companies involved in a criminal case at Vietnam Construction Bank.

Sang joined BIDV in 1983 and rose through the ranks. In 2013, he was appointed deputy general director of the bank and chair of BIDV Securities JSC.

In August last year, Sang resigned from the post of deputy general director at BIDV.

The central Inspection Commission of the Communist Party of Vietnam concluded in May 2018, that there had been violations by BIDV officials, consisting former chair Tran Bac Ha, two general deputy directors Tran Luc Lang and Doan Anh Sang.

Former chair Tran Bac Ha was arrested in November last year.
